Required Upgrade for POS

AUTHOR: The Shift4 Updates team

If you are on one of these builds, then you do not need to upgrade:

AX
15.8.4.6.1
15.11.1.2
15.13.4+

IX
1.22.2+

WHAT is required?

  • Following the Freedompay platform issue on September 18, 2022 SpotOn was required to update all Point-of-Sale applications with new Freedompay libraries.

  • We strongly recommended that all SpotOn / Freedompay clients plan for rollout of a POS update, to obtain best benefit from all resiliency features, and to comply with this Freedompay EOL announcement.

  • Some clients remain on versions that do not include the patch needed to protect the issue from occuring again, and we need to take further action to ensure all clients are updated.

WHY is the upgrade required?

  • Freedompay identified an underlying bug which was triggered during this incident, and has published several critical stability improvements and bugfixes as a hotfix for their Android payments middleware, which is used by SpotOn POS applications.

  • Freedompay notified all clients that any version of their Android middleware prior to this patch will be End-of- Life, as of October 10. As a result, SpotOn is incorporating this required update into all future releases which rely on this firmware, for ActivateX, InteractX, and Interact Classic.

  • FreedomPay recently ran an audit report that identified sites running versions that are no longer supported and as such, there is renewed urgency to update by March 31st, 2023.

WHAT is the impact of this EOL Notice?

  • SpotOn will not prevent any payments or functionality from POS applications in the event an upgrade is not performed.

  • However, while SpotOn has enjoyed a long period of stability with this software in market, the underlying potential issue on currently released versions exposes the risk that Freedompay could elect to block traffic if the bug is triggered again, per their EOL notice.

HOW can we comply with this notice?

  • Please reach out to SpotOn Enterprise Support at enterprisesupport@spoton.com/ (877) 559-4225 or your Customer Success Manager for coordinating upgrades.
